Rob Neely knows that innovation and long-term planning are vital in his industry.

Leading Oxford Utilities as General Manager since 2011, Rob learned early that continuously implementing innovative technology is the key to the sustained success of his organization. We asked him to share some of the ways he has prepared his LPC’s infrastructure for the future:

“Oxford Utilities has deployed a number of innovative solutions over the past 10 years. We’ve installed AMI electric and water meters on our system. We have a fully deployed SCADA system with fiber connectivity to our substations. We have also installed intellirupters, smart capacitors, and other devices on the RF radio network. We’re in the process of installing voltage control at the substations for demand response. Most recently, we installed the first EV Fast Charger in Oxford, which is getting a lot of action.  In addition to affordable rates and reliable power, we are expected to provide a high level of customer service. Innovation involves using new technologies to solve old problems and delivery on all three of those requirements.”

While the system is robust with new technology, Rob credits Seven States for their role in helping Oxford Utilities deploy even more innovative projects in their footprint:

“Seven States was a valuable partner in our recently completed EV Fast Charger project. The City of Oxford, being a college town, has a higher-than-average number of EVs, driven by students, visitors or residents. While there were a number of Level 2 chargers in town, there were no EV Fast Chargers available to the public. Seven States was involved from start to finish on our project—from site selection, grant application, contract approval and equipment purchase to contractor supervision, installation, invoicing, and reimbursement. Our site turned out great and is getting a lot of use, thanks to the help of Seven States.”

In a constantly evolving industry, Rob knows that change can often be intimidating, so he offered this piece of advice to general managers considering technological steps forward:

“I’ve gathered most of my great ideas from other managers, so it’s important to learn from your peers. Also, listen to your customers and board, and use their feedback to determine which investments are right for your system.”
